It was inevitable that he'd end up in Los Angeles... It was a recent boom town, and yet by the year 1920, Hollywood was the center of the film industry and quite a bit of attention. Los Angeles was a paradise, situated in the desert of California. Not to mention, it was where you wanted to be if you wished to make a name for yourself. And well, Alfred F. Jones liked two things that this city promised: fame and fortune. (Of course, it's notorious reputation for corruption helped a bit- who'd notice another con man in a city that was run and policed by them?) For a boy who had nothing, how could he resist such promises?

The most important part of a con was audacity, he reminded himself. Fear would only undermine his efforts, and well, the authorities could smell fear a mile away. With a deep breath, Alfred stepped through the doors to the bank. To the people inside, he was a gangly nineteen year old with blond hair that refused to stay put and was quite mussed from the hat. His (stolen) suit wasn't particularly flashy or expensive. All in all, Alfred F. Jones appeared to be exceedingly average (every bit of the outfit and his demeanor had been planned and perfected to seem that way, oddly enough). But here he was, sliding into the bank so he could claim to be some intern one of the other employee's had hired. Alfred had spent a good few weeks studying this bank as well as the area around it, and so here he was, bluffing his way in so he might be able to slowly pick some cash from the money tree itself. Carting illegal booze was apparently too easy (though Mickey Cohen, Al Capone, and Lucky Luciano might not have agreed).

Alfred approached the secretary and explained himself, "I'm the new intern, m'am. I think they said I was supposed to head here an' then talk to you." He flashed her an apologetic grin, playing the part of a frazzled young man at his first internship. Now then, the exits were behind him, and there was one to his right. If security appeared, well, Alfred had a few escape plans mapped out. Nevertheless, this risky venture was worth a shot, and it was already too late. He adjusted his glasses, a nervous fidget added for effect. He could handle this, he was a hero at one point- even if he wasn't so sure about himself at the present.

Arthur Kirkland had a reputation to uphold. He was well educated, a brilliant businessman and financier, and above all else, a gentleman. As a proud citizen of Great Britain, he was determined to maintain his integrity and dignity, despite his current situation. Unlike his brothers whom all were granted well established positions back in Europe, he was sent overseas to begin a new chapter in his life.

The banking system in the United States was in absolute chaos, no matter what the press had to say about it. Unlimited credit, massive bank loans going unchecked, and corruption in every corner -- it was an absolute madhouse of greed and spending. Arthur had taken up a corporate position of a small cluster of banks stationed in Los Angeles as an attempt to salvage the situation there. He had been working diligently over the past five years and little good had come from it. He would have packed up and left had it not been for his stubborn nature. Leaving would have suggested weakness, failure -- neither of which were acceptable in his mind. So, in accordance to his nature, Arthur continued his work in this god awful country. His tireless work lead to his only acquaintances outside of the office being the bartender from the pub down the street, and the fat cat that had taken up residence in his apartment. The Englishman far too proud to admit that he was, even just a little lonely.

That particular morning, he happened to be in a very foul mood. Some figures had come in late yesterday afternoon and he had spent the majority of his evening working. This was not an uncommon occurrence considering his position, but it did not make him any less irritated when he had to forgo a good book for endless pages of dizzying numbers. Arthur had the sheets tucked under his arm as he wove through the throngs of people to the receptionist desk. There was a person already occupying her attention, but he brushed past them and lifted his mail from the tray behind her nameplate, just as he did every morning. He was about to walk away when the woman spoke. “Pardon me sir, but this man says he is a new intern.” Arthur glanced over at the man behind the desk. Tall, blond, handsome face -- fairly standard for the superficial standards of this country. “Put him to work then.” Why was this women bothering him with such details? His job did not include looking after interns.

“Yes, well, it just seems to be that I do not have any records of--” How was it this woman managed to keep ahold of her job? She so utterly disorganized. Every day it was a problem of misplacing this file or another, yet he never had the mind to fire her. Sometimes he cursed his appreciation for a fine set of large breasts.

Arthur waited for the women to pause, subtly watching her chest heave in panic to distract from the usual apologies. “No matter. Have him sent down to work with Toris. He could use the help,” With a decisive nod, Arthur turned and walked back to his office to begin the work day. The new intern was promptly forgotten.

"You sure I can't help ya out, Mister... uh...," Alfred paused, glancing around the desk before noticing the nameplate. He took a moment to sound out the last name before hazarding a guess, "Kinkland?" That didn't sound right... yet people did have weird last names, so Alfred decided to hold his tongue. He offered Mr. 'Kinkland' a grin.

Alfred fidgeted a bit, scratching the back of his head. "I might not be trained or whatever, but I'm sure I could help you out somehow. You do look really busy. And well, ain't helping out what an intern's for?" He hadn't failed to notice all the paperwork and mail on the other man's desk. Alfred would even dare to guess that the banker was a bit grumpy today! Then again, maybe the other man was just tired or something. But as long as Alfred was here, he might as well help a bit. Even if he was only here to pocket some money that didn't belong to him. Couldn't good things come out of bad ones? The young American wasn't completely sure, but he couldn't really go around in dark clothes and a handlebar moustache while cackling evilly all the while. Tying maids to railroad tracks seemed more likely to get him executed in San Quentin than money in his pockets. Plus, well, outright villainy just wasn't Alfred's style.

Alfred allowed himself a moment to slow down and focus on the situation at hand. The banker's unfinished comment came to mind. "Wait a minute... were you sayin' earlier that she lost my file? Can I still work here? Will we haveta file a replacement one?" a lost file huh? Alfred could certainly work with that cover. He had to file this little gem away for further schemes. Oh the wonders of a disorganized secretary. One could blame lost files or even slip in some extra ones.

So far so good, he reminded himself. Then again, he told himself that this job was far from over. But he had at least gotten in, and the banker hadn't kicked him out on first sight. Plus, Alfred had a decent excuse for not having records. Perhaps this was just his lucky day (or perhaps it was simply dumb luck).

Arthur had just settled into his desk to begin the day when the interruption came. Oh yes, please, come right in, he thought bitterly. To his credit, the banker did try to keep himself from appearing irritated, if only because the voice that sounded was not one he recognized. The last thing he needed was to insult some big time client who didn’t know any better. Ugh, he could only imagine the headache that would cause. But when he did finally look up, he was not met with the face of anyone of any importance. Oh no, instead he was staring up at the new American intern. Brilliant.

His twitching eyelid was the only visible sign of annoyance he showed at the gross mispunctuation of his last name -- something he silently applauded himself for. “Kirkland. Arthur Kirkland.” Could this boy not read? Honestly, he would have to track down the moron that hired him and give them a stern talking to about selecting interns. Arthur fought back the urge to immediately respond with a snappy remark, reminding himself that not everyone was used to his hectic lifestyle and dry personality. Besides, he could use somebody to help with the grunt work. Arthur scanned the intern once more, taking in his sloppy appearance and silly grin with a mental groan. From the looks of it though, this one would be far more trouble then he was worth. “You would be correct about the intern's position Mr... I am sorry, what did you say your name was? As for the file, I will have Katyusha look for the misplaced one. In the meantime...”

The banker stood up and began flipping through stacks of papers. Not coming up with what he wanted, he turned around and leaned over his back desk, thumbing through papers. “Where is that bloody -- ah.” He managed to tug the papers free from beneath two large files. “Fill these out for now and hand them back to the secretary in front,” He said, handing the pen and papers over. He stood there for a moment, looking over the boy with a hesitant expression coloring his face. And then what? The boy was offering to help him out -- him personally. Nobody bothered to stick around him once they got a taste of his bad attitude, unless they didn’t have a choice. The grumpy Englishman tried to pass off the interns offer as a means of sucking up to the boss in hopes of milking a few extra dollars pay, but he could not deny there was a part of him that hoped this wasn't the case. If he were willing to be honest with himself, it sounded kind of nice to have a little friendly company sometimes during work hours. He had forgotten what it was like to have companionship. Maybe this time, he would be able to finally make a human connection -- a friend.

He brushed those thoughts away as soon as they entered his mind. Arthur was not here to make a life -- he was here to work. It was best for everyone if he kept that in mind. "When you've finished submitting the replacement documents to Katyusha, come back here and I will set you to work adding figures." He was not having the new intern work with him because he was desperate. Honestly, he needed an extra set of eyes looking over files, just to be sure that no mistakes were being made. It had nothing to do at all with the fact that this was the first person to give him a genuine smile in nearly two years. No, that was completely irrelevant.

At least, that was what he kept trying to convince himself of.

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Lord Arthur Kirkland Wed Aug 15, 2012 5:33 pm

"Jo-... Johnson. Frederick T. Johnson. I prefer Freddy, though," Alfred quickly made up a fake name. After all, he didn't exactly want people to even briefly associate 'Alfred Fontaine Jones' with any sort of misdeed. Plus well, such backdraft would make it's way back to his parents and even his brother. Alfred sincerely didn't like the thought of that. Sure he was on his own now, but that didn't mean he had completely given up on them! Things were just... complicated. He didn't even know if they accepted the money he sent back. Alfred nervously ran his hand through his hair, trying to smooth it back. He offered Mr. Kirkland one of his bright grins before sticking out his hand. "It's a real pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kirkland!," Alfred stated, hoping to at least make Mr. Kirkland not seem so damned grumpy.

The forms were quickly stuffed in the young man's hands. Alfred sat himself down in the other man's office so he could fill out the form, making details about Frederick Johnson's life as he proceeded. Alfred had to admit, one of the best parts of the job was making up stories about the people he played. Freddy here was a fresh young boy, new to both banking and the greater Los Angeles area. After all, who didn't have a bit of sympathy for the new guy? Both Alfred and Freddy were a bit too young to have been in the war, and frankly, Alfred did find it a bit distasteful to pretend to be a veteran anyways. Ah, and then came the words Alfred didn't quite know. He was taking too long wasn't he? It was best to distract Mr. Kirkland so he wouldn't arouse any suspicion. Alfred cleared his throat and started to talk, "From your accent, I reckon you're not from around here either, huh? Pretty interestin' place, wouldn't you say? How long've you been here? Is it really the bee's knees?" Surely shooting the breeze like this would provide a decent cover.

"An' I'll be glad to help out however I can, Mr. Kirkland. Adding figures and whatnot, nothing is too hard for ol' Freddy Johnson!" Alfred laughed and patted his bicep while flexing his arm. He repeated his new name in his head a few more times. There simply wasn't room for error. How could he explain away falsifying his name? The short answer was that not even Alfred could charm his way out of a bind like that. He just had to make this work until he could pocket enough money, then leave town for a while. Sounded easy enough, he told himself.

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Sheriff Jones Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:46 pm

Had Arthur not been distracted with his inner dialogue, he might have caught the small hesitation in his new interns voice when he made his introductions. But alas, he only managed to shake himself back to reality in time to hear the other’s false name said with confidence. Because of this, he was left with no reason to doubt its legitimacy. “Mr. Johnson then. I am certain it will be a delight working with you.” Arthur shook the interns hand before turning his attention back to the file before him. He did not make any mental notes about how warm Johnson’s palm felt, or how large his hand was in comparison to his own. And his cheeks were certainly not, despite what the poor lighting might have suggested, flushed. And even if they were, it was entirely due to the fact that it was unusually warm in his office. The American who sat before him was little consequence. Really.

As Johnson filled out the forms, Arthur did his best to get a start on that day’s workload. However, having someone in his office while he worked was more than a little distracting. He kept catching himself looking up at the other man, checking his facial expressions or peeking down at the form to measure his progress. This is entirely the reason why he had insisted on having a private office when he made the move from England to America. He simply could not work with another person in close quarters -- much too irritating. Arthur frowned a bit. He was intending to tell the other to move into a separate room, but just as he had opened his mouth to speak, Johnson beat him to the punch. “Ah yes, well...” He coughed awkwardly into his hand. “I came here from England about five years ago. However, I must confess that I have not had the opportunity to see much of the city.” How pathetic must that sound. He had been here for over five years and had barely stepped outside his neighborhood. If that wasn’t a sign of how poor his relationship skills were, nothing was. “But I am sure it is a lovely place.”

As Johnson flexed his arm, the first thought that ran through Arthur’s mind was how impressive his muscles were. Even through his dress shirt, he could see the hard lines of powerful arms, just barely hidden beneath the fabric. The banker quickly looked away as soon as he had sense enough to push that thought to the back of his mind. Perhaps he needed a break. To be fantasizing about a young intern was simply disgraceful for a man in his position. “I am sure.” He handed Johnson a small stack of folders and pointed to a vacant desk outside his office. “Please look these over, marking any inconsistencies or mistakes that you come across. When you have finished, you may take them to Katyusha in the front and collect another stack from me here. You have an hour off for lunch and are expected not to be tardy in your return. Now please, get to work Mr. Johnson.” He needed his space back. He was starting to let his mind wander off into a land of impossibilities. It was easier not to let himself hope if he wasn’t constantly reminded of what he wanted most, but would never have. So, he put on his best frown, snapped the file he was working on closed and turned his chair away from the door until he was certain the intern had left.

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Lord Arthur Kirkland Mon Aug 20, 2012 7:16 pm

"Mr. Johnson, huh? I'm used to people calling my dad that! You sure you can't just call me Freddy?" Alfred gave Arthur a giddy grin. Arthur hadn't noticed his slight slip up at all! This was still going to be a challenge- but Alfred felt like he could handle it. "Or even Frederick, but that's kind of a mouthful huh? It's just weird being Mr. Johnson, 'cause I'm not all married or serious and I don't have a glass eye!" So perhaps Alfred did have a fondness for tall tales. But he liked to think that his new persona would seem too ordinary without his... embellishments. If Alfred wasn't wrapped up in his own little stories and worries, he probably would've noticed the flushed expressions on Arthur's face. Alfred did tend to get caught up in his own little world.

Alfred did end up feeling a bit uncomfortable when Arthur examined his expressions and paperwork. How was he supposed to fool Arthur completely if the man was paying so much attention to him? He just had to play it cool. If Arthur found out about his little deception, Alfred hoped he could outrun whatever was sent after him. Los Angeles was a large town with a lot of young faces seeking fortune like him- hiding in crowds was a good strategy, wasn't it? Alfred couldn't describe how relieved he was when Arthur was distracted by his talking. "Wow, that's quite a move! But you haven't looked around much? I guess this job keeps ya busy! Though I guess this means we could explore the city together! If you wanted to, that is. Well, that and if we have any free time. I bet you know a decent speakeasy or two. Not that I'm planning on disobeying the law or anything," Alfred tried to look nervous about the sheer thought of bending the law. He reminded himself that Freddy was a goody two shoes trying to seem like a cool cat, and not just some nervous kid who thought himself a con man.

He quickly managed to finish the rest of the form. Admittedly he did guess on a couple of the answers, but Alfred hoped they weren't major things. Who would waste their time examining his form closely unless Alfred acted up? Arthur then handed him a stack of papers and pointed to a desk outside the office. Alfred could tell that it was going to be rather boring... And it was probably a terrible idea to doodle all over the bank's papers, so that was out of the question. "All righty then, Mr. Kirkland! Feel free to stop by and say hey," Alfred grinned and started to move towards the desk. He ended up tripping over himself and dropping the folders on the floor. Alfred quickly bent down and gathered them up. He let out a nervous laugh, hoping that this little bit of overeagerness wouldn't bother Arthur too much. Fumbling about like an overexcited puppy wasn't exactly professional, after all.

Alfred managed to gather the folders up again and stood up straight. He gave Arthur another grin before heading to his new desk. While spelling and reading weren't exactly Alfred's strong points, he could handle math a bit better. After all, a good bit of his tricks relied on being able to reduce things to numbers and chance. Plus, he had to keep his own finances in order. But that didn't mean he didn't find this sort of work anything other than boring. He found himself almost obsessively checking the clock, wondering why it wasn't any closer to his lunch hour. Alfred did his best to suppress the urge to slam his head on the desk and groan. It was equally difficult not to draw little things on the margins of the papers he had to go through. Despite time flowing like molasses, lunch time finally rolled around. At the exact moment the countdown in Alfred's head, he jumped up and let out a whoop of victory.

He strolled on over to Arthur's office and stood in the doorway. "Mr. Kirkland, I hope I'm not bothering or anything, but since it's lunch time and whatever, I was wondering if you knew any good places to eat nearby. I don't wanna spend my lunch getting lost or not finding a good place to eat, yanno? If you can't help me, I guess I could ask the secretary or someone else, so don't worry!" Alfred asked. After all, lunch was one of the most important parts of the day! If there wasn't anywhere good, then Alfred would just have to pack his own lunch from then on. Though he didn't like the thought of skipping a meal. It was possible, but Alfred wasn't entirely fond of being hungry. Then again, who was?

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Sheriff Jones Tue Aug 21, 2012 4:33 pm

He wasn’t entirely sure what Johnson was hoping to accomplish, but he was embarrassed nonetheless. This was a bank, and a rather prestigious one at that. A man in his position simply could not go around referring to interns by their first names. All that would do would invite for everyone, interns, secretaries, and officials alike to feel that they had to right to address him as Arthur. Unacceptable. “Thank you, but given the circumstances, I must decline your offer Johnson.” Even in his mind, that sounded too harsh. Arthur did not want to appear ungrateful. It was just that given the fact that their relationship was entirely professional, being on a first name basis with each other was not recommended. “Still, I suppose if we ever catch each other outside the office, I could refer to you as such.” Not that they ever would, but he supposed saying so would soften his earlier rejection.

Arthur tried his best to disguise how grateful he was that Johnson seemed to place the blame for his lack of interest in the city on the job rather than on him. “It does keep me busy, yes. I ah...” Did his new intern just offer to spend time with him outside the work environment to go exploring? Arthur mulled over what Johnson had said and was astonished to find that yes, he did make such an offer. “As for seeing more of the town together... I wouldn’t be opposed to that. If you ever found the time that is.” Even when accepting the invitation, Arthur wore an air that suggested that he was being burdened by the very idea. But the truth of the matter was, he might be just a little bit excited by the prospect. His attention shifted when he realized that Johnson was nervous at the idea of doing a little illegal drinking. For some reason, he found this realization rather adorable. “Johnson, I would hardly berate you spending an evening at a speakeasy,” He said with a light chuckle. “To be perfectly honest, I find prohibition ridiculous.”

When he heard Johnson collect his things to go, Arthur allowed himself one final glance at the new intern before he returned to work. “Yes of course,” He said, although he knew he was far too socially inept to ever make good on that promise. The banker was just about to flip open a new file when Johnson made a spectacle of himself. He somehow managed to trip over his own feet and dropping the files onto the floor. Arthur might have made a snide remark, or even chuckled a bit, but any sound he might have made stayed lodged in his throat when he got an eyeful of his interns backside. Oh dammit. That young American brat just had to have a backside that looked like it was sculpted by Michelangelo, didn’t he? Arthur quickly averted his eyes and forced himself to focus. Forget it, he willed. Just forget it.

Unfortunately for him though, he could not. For the rest of the morning, all he could think about was his new intern and his rather superior behind. It was beyond frustrating. He tried to concentrate, tried to keep a steady workflow, but every time his mind wandered, it was always back to Johnson. By the time his lunch hour came, he was about ready to rip his hair out. Tea, that was what he needed. A nice cup of tea and a bit of quiet to clear his mind and he would be as good as new. But, it was never to be, because in that exact moment, who came waltzing through the door, but the very person who had been tormenting him from afar. “Johnson. You are not bothering me.” Lies, but it wasn’t the poor lad’s fault he was so bloody lonely. “As for restaurants, I can’t say I know any good places. I usually stay for lunch.” Johnson said if Arthur didn’t know, he would go ask somebody else for directions. He would probably make some new acquaintance and opt out of ever talking with the grumpy banker again, save for when he had to. That was fine, he was used to being alone. He needed to focus on work anyway. He had a job to do and he mustn’t forget that. Besides, it wouldn’t be long before Johnson forgot all about him. “I am sure somebody else will have some recommendations if you were to ask. I am sorry I couldn’t be more help.”

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Lord Arthur Kirkland Fri Sep 14, 2012 8:56 am

If Alfred had been aware that it appeared that his backside was sculpted by one of the great artists of the Renaissance, he would've been pleased. Well, if he was a bit more familiar with such topics, that is. Seeing as it tended to be written in large, difficult books, history had never been his forté. Nevertheless, Alfred did enjoy compliments, and well, he would probably be glad that Arthur was focusing on his backside and not the fact that Alfred was there to steal from the bank.

The young man wasn't able to resist the urge to pout like a puppy when his offer to grab lunch was rejected. He had thought he had made a friend! But if Arthur didn't want to go eat with him, well, Alfred would just have to win him over somehow! After all, it was always fun to have friends, and it would probably make the boring work hours go by faster. "Oh... okay then. I guess if you forget your lunch or something we can eat together," he paused, "Well uh, you look pretty busy, Mr. K. So I guess I'll catch you later!" Alfred let out a nervous laugh and smiled before darting out of the room. It wasn't fair! He was supposed to make friends easily!

Nevertheless, Alfred couldn't waste this opportunity, so he'd have to follow Arthur's advice and find someone else to go eat with. The thought of having lunch alone was a bit terrifying to the young man. He'd done it before, it was just... quite lonely and miserable when he did. So then, the only option was to go out and make a lunch buddy who was somewhere in the building. Alfred peeked into the various offices and rooms, looking for someone adequately not-creepy or too-old looking. It took a bit of searching, but when he found his target, he pounced.

"Hey! I'm the new intern here and I'm sorta lost," Alfred smiled and tried to catch the other person's attention. Then he'd introduce himself and try to worm his way into getting a new lunch buddy. If that failed... well he'd just grab food and try to eat it in Arthur's office. Alfred was anything if not stubborn.

(( ahaha I decided I'd leave it up to you as to who the new friend might be? I was thinking maybe Lithuania, Canada, France, or even Russia. But if you have another idea or something, just go ahead! >w< ))

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

Post by Sheriff Jones Sat Sep 22, 2012 5:06 pm

Johnson’s resulting pout was enough to make Arthur instantly regret rejecting his lunch offer. He couldn’t honestly be broken up about this -- they hardly knew each other! Besides, Arthur hadn’t exactly acted all that friendly during the course of their three hour relationship, so what reason did the new intern have to suspect anything different? Arthur knew it was for the best to send the young man off and continue on in solitude. But, for whatever reason, Johnson’s extended invitation and nervous parting smile were strangely endearing to him. “Johnson I ah...” But he was already gone. Damn. There went another chance to make an honest human connection. No, he couldn’t think like that. He had a job to do and getting distracted was not going to do any good. Arthur straightened his back, focused back on the figures in front of him, and settled into work.

Arthur’s resolve lasted a minute and a half before he was out of his office searching for the new intern. If he was lucky, perhaps he could catch him before he found someone more exciting to spend his lunch hour with. He did, however have the foresight to grab a stack of papers so that if his search proved unsuccessful, he wouldn’t look like a complete idiot to anyone who happened to spot him. Arthur managed to catch sight of Johnson just as he turned the corner, his eyes widening with horror. Oh no, from the direction he was heading, the new intern was bound to run right into him. Arthur, as a proper gentleman and a proud citizen of the Great Britain, simply could not leave the poor lad on his own -- not when he had unknowingly placed himself into the clutches of that man.

Embarrassment aside, he had an obligation to save his new intern from the hands of one perverted Frenchman.

* * *

Said perverted Frenchman was currently eyeing up Johnson like a starved man might eye an open buffet. From the boys opening lines, Francis found himself very interested in what it might be exactly that he needed. “Lost? Ah well.” He stood up, quickly brushing off the work he would rather avoid anyway. “I would be happy to assist you~ My name is Francis. May I ask who you are?” He was just about to oh so casually brush a hand across the other man’s shoulder when a stack of papers slammed into his face.

“Neglecting your job again, frog? I said I needed those files documented by Friday.”

Francis looked up, hardly surprised to see a certain Englishman with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face. Ah well, what was a day without tossing a few insults back and forth with his favorite rosbif?

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

"Hiya! I'm Frederick T. Johnson! My friends call me Freddy. It's real swell to meet you, Francis!" Alfred grinned and held out his hand. He couldn't help but feel as if he was being sized up for a meal or something. Alfred quickly shook the thought and attributed it to sheer anxiety rather than any behavior of the frenchman. After all, Francis looked like a perfectly nice man! But the other man was swiftly hit in the face with a stack of papers, and Alfred retracted his offered hand. Alfred blinked, rather stunned into slack jawed confusion. He was about to ask what had happened when he was interrupted by Arthur.

"Woah are you all right, Francis?" he quickly checked on his new acquaintance before shooting another brilliant grin at Arthur. "Heya Mister K, did you reconsider your lunch plans?" Alfred had the expression of a puppy promised with the thought of a treat. So what if he thought that Arthur's accent had a certain charm to it, and he guessed the other man had a pleasant look to him, Alfred really liked making new friends! The thought of starting a silly little crush was the furthest thing from the new intern's mind.

He briefly wondered why Arthur had hit the other man in the face with papers. Earlier Arthur had seemed quite nice and professional, but now he seemed a bit... irritated? Alfred shrugged it off- it was probably nothing. He laughed. "So what do you guys do, play tag with paper or something? Is it any fun? Are there other games we can play? Because man normal work is really boring! Is it always this boring? Or are there cool secret assignments we get every so often? Preferably pretty often rather than once in a blue moon. Ooh! We could be like spies, but totally the heroic kind, yanno? Oh my gosh like that new thing that's been going around... Stupendous Mansir? No, that's not right. The dude in the blue and red tights, Superman!" Alfred descended into rambling about whatever came into his head. Surely they would be interested in these topics too! After all, Alfred had pretty good taste in reading material and exciting exploits! Boring old men in suits would kill for thrilling exploits and mad stunts! Well, that and Alfred admittedly did enjoy the sound of his head rattling sometimes. It was certainly better than silence, and there was simply so much to do and say!

Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry] Empty Re: Birds from Malta apparently have eggs that are difficult to boil [Kirk + Sherry]

In his twenty-three years of life, Arthur had developed a reputation for being cold hearted and just a tad bit cruel. But even he could not help but find Johnson’s hopeful expression utterly adorable. It broke through his carefully constructed defense systems and left him sputtering a bit to come up with an answer. “I supposed I could, if your offer still stands, accompany you to lunch. I seem to have forgotten mine this morning.” That was a reasonable enough excuse, and Johnson had been the one to suggest meeting if such an event did occur. Yes, Arthur was confident that he would not be caught in his own lie. Or at least, he had been confident until he caught sight of Francis’s expression. The frog was wearing a familiar grin, which, from previous experience, could only mean a headache in the very near future. “Ohonoho, yes, let us all go out together. I know the most delightful restaurant nearby~”

No please, for the love of all that was holy, he couldn’t tolerate an entire lunch with Francis. It was bad enough that he had to suffer working down the hall with him, but to be placed in the same room and expected to make small talk -- impossible. He was just about to voice his opinions in a rather ungentlemanly manner when Johnson spoke again. It took a great deal of self restraint not to immediately fly off the handle at Francis, but for the new interns sake he did so and granted him his attention. This, he quickly learned, was a mistake.

For the first time in their years of knowing each other, Francis and Arthur found themselves sharing a look while wearing the same, baffled expression. What on earth was this boy blathering on about? Arthur tried his best to follow Johnson’s train of thought, but the lack of coherency soon had him very lost. He wasn’t sure if he should interrupt or just wait for the lad to either run out of steam or remember that he was supposed to be out on his lunch break. Francis seemed to be struggling with the same problem and shot him a curious look. Arthur, remembering himself, shot him a quickly shot him a glare before turning to the intern. “Johnson.” He said rather sharply, hoping to snap him back to reality. “Did you want to have lunch or not? First day or not, I will not be lenient if you were to arrive back tardy.” The threat was a hollow one, but he hoped it would be enough to get Johnson moving.

Alfred wanted to drag both Francis and Arthur into a huge hug when they agreed to go to lunch with him. But even he knew that was a bit much. Instead, the excess energy and excitement took the form of Alfred practically bouncing in his shoes. He was glad he had been able to convince them to eat lunch with him. It was going to be fun! Though he wasn't sure that he'd be able to handle being forced back to his desk and back to work after that. It just wasn't fair that it had to be so boring! But the money was worth it, and lord knew that Alfred needed money. "You do? Well let's go eat there! I love me some good food! Well as long as it ain't too expensive. I'm a poor intern," Alfred responded to Francis' offer.

Alfred remained oblivious to the conversation that Arthur's and Francis' eyes were having. He figured they must be wrapped up in Alfred's discussion of things. Score! There was nothing quite like having friends who shared your interests. Alfred had been about to change the subject to sports when Arthur interrupted him. It seemed a bit harsh, but Alfred figured that Arthur was hungry or something. "Well then what are we waiting for? Though if we're late, it'll probably be because it took you so long to have lunch with me," he childishly stuck out his tongue for added emphasis. That wasn't the most professional behavior, but Alfred rationalized that it was his lunch hour so he could get away with it.

Feeling hungry and pretty excited, Alfred began to move in the direction he believed the entrance was in. As he moved, Alfred began to babble about superman again. So what if he really really looked up to a hero? The world needed heroes, especially if Alfred wasn't one of them. He had a half decent sense of direction, but Arthur had sidetracked him and made the young man pretty turned around. As it stood, Alfred was heading in the direction of his desk and not the restaurant that his mind was already drifting towards. He hoped that they had hamburgers. Well, affordable ones really. While Alfred had some long term, lots of money making plans, at the moment, the money was not in his possession. The thought of leaving Arthur and Francis on such a note was forced deep into the back of Alfred's mind. He didn't need to think of that right now. That was simply a hurdle he'd have to get over at some other point. If he didn't make any friends, it'd just be suspicious.

Arthur was starting to suspect that their new intern was a complete and total idiot. Not only did he lack any sense of professionalism (what with sticking his tongue out in teasing), but he hardly allowed for a moment of silence before he was off talking about that Superman character of his. Had this been anyone else, Arthur would not have been able to resist the urge to lecture at them for such behavior. But with Johnson, his actions were almost too cute for him to admonish. Oh lord, what was wrong with him? He was just another useless intern set out to make his workload even more hellish, it did no good pretending any differently. “Johnson,” He said, trying to ignore the fact that his voice was not quite as harsh as he had intended. “The entrance is this way.” Arthur turned and began to walk in the proper direction, keeping an eye out on both Francis and Johnson to be sure they were not only following, but the perverted Frenchman didn’t try and cop a feel while his back was turned.

When they finally made it out the door however, Francis stepped up and slid an arm around Johnson’s, tugging him closer (much to Arthur’s annoyance). “It is not far from here~” Arthur’s eye twitched as he watched Francis’s hand slowly trail down the intern’s side, very subtly grazing against his backside before pulling away again. Sly bastard thought he could go around molesting every fresh face he happened across. “Come along~ We do not want to disappoint Arthur and arrive back late.” Oh how he hated that subtle jab at his nonexistent social life. If he wasn’t standing within three feet of their workplace, he would have punched him. Instead Arthur resigned himself to grumble something insulting under his breath as he followed the pair to whatever restaurant Francis had deemed acceptable.

When they arrived, he was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not the gaudy, overly priced shop he had been expecting. The restaurant was small, personal, and overall appeared quiet and rather quaint in comparison to where he always imagined Francis would spend his free time. Arthur still made a point to stick up his nose a little when they found a seat, not willing to give the frog any credit for finding a nice place. “I hope this is alright with you Monsieur Johnson~” Arthur frowned a little when he saw how close Francis had pulled his chair to the interns. He shot him another glare and a warning frown but the irritating frog brushed it off with ease. Already he had a feeling that this little lunch of theirs was going to end in a migraine.

When it was pointed out that Alfred was heading in the wrong direction, he simply tried to laugh it off. He then turned quickly to keep pace with Arthur so that he could continue his near-constant chatter. He tagged along with Francis and Arthur to the restaurant. "Nah, I'm sure it's a bit excusable if we're the teeniest bit late. After all, it's only my first day, and you guys need to take time to show me the ropes," he laughed a bit.

He liked the warm, cozy feel of the restaurant. It was probably family-run and not too expensive. Alfred grinned and looked around, enjoying the ambience. He hadn't eaten out in a while and was used to nabbing sandwiches and small things from delis and markets. He had certainly come to the right place. "This place looks great, Francis! And y'all can call me Freddy since we're not back at the bank, yeah? We're friends. Mr. Johnson still sounds like my old man, rather than me," he laughed a bit before settling down at the table. "This place looks real swell."

He stretched out a bit before taking a peek at the menu. Damn the hamburger looked tempting... but perhaps it would be better for him to get something a little less pricey. Alfred glanced around the menu a few more times before ultimately deciding that a hamburger would be so worth it. Though he might have to forgo the soda pop for water, which was a bit of a disappointment. He reminded himself that this was simply the start of his latest money making operation and soon enough he'd have more than enough money to get all the hamburgers, soda pop, and snazzy shoes he wanted, and then some for Matthew back home.

He grinned at Arthur and Francis. "So, what are you guys plannin' to get?"
