Throughout the weeks, life slowly improved for Alfred. Not to say that he was in any less danger of being shot or released, but it was clear that the captain was pleased with his work. He stopped blatantly threatening his life (although the strong implication was there least he decide this was the day he was going to act out) and even provided a more comfortable cell and larger food portions. It was better than the original deal had suggested, but that didn’t mean Alfred hated it any less. He still had no freedom and was simply being treated well for his obedience. There was something sickening in that and he often times found himself wanted to attempt an escape. But the knowledge that he would simply be cast aside and forgotten kept him from trying. As Francis said to him the first day, he had to wait for the opportune moment.

The only real enjoyment he got was working on the ship. As much as he hated to admit it, the Dramatic Exit was a beautiful vessel and it filled him with pride to see it running so smoothly because of his work. It was only too bad that the world’s biggest asshole was the captain and this ship was hardly being used for moral reasons. Still, he took the small consolation that when it came to matters of technology, he far outranked Kirkland - a fact he often found himself snickering about. Honestly, that guy couldn’t even steer his own ship.

That particular day he was running a routine maintenance check on the deck. Everything was running smoothly as normal, save for a few tweaks which he managed to quickly fix up. Once he had rewired and rewrote nearly everything that the former mechanic had done (Antonio was a nice man he had realized, but not the best when it came to technology), his work load had decreased. Mostly he just went around on checks and monitored the computers to give himself something to do. He was just about to make his way back to the computers when the ship suddenly shook. Alfred stumbled backwards, catching himself on a rail and looking around in confusion.

The normally rowdy ship had suddenly become a madhouse - people running everywhere, all now clutching weapons with looks of anticipation on their faces. Alfred understood then - it was going to be a fight. Weeks of nearly peaceful flying had to be a rarity aboard of ship like this, but he was still shocked by the sudden chaos around him. He shoved himself back against a wall to get out of the way of running crewmembers, wondering what the hell he was supposed to be doing. Kirkland had never allowed him a weapon (for obvious reasons), and he didn’t have much experience fighting on these grounds. That left him with little option. He cursed and stood in front of the main deck computer, hands flying across the keyboard with ease. If he was stuck on this ship, he sure as hell didn’t want it to fall. So for now, he would focus on the damage being taken and try and counteract it for as long as possible.

At first it seemed like a normal attack, probably some military raid in a desperate attempt to stop the pirates. Such attacks were rare, but welcome, since it meant being able to loot hi-tech gear from the defeated ship as well as some extra rations, which were always welcome. However, it was soon clear that this attack was something even the toughest pirates feared.

Reavers.

Reavers were people (if they could be called that anymore) who had ventured to the ends of the galaxy, or perhaps to the most dangerous ones, and gone insane. Unable to cope with the sheer size and emptiness of the universe, they reverted to a primal state. Victims caught by the Reavers would be killed, raped, eaten, and dismembered, not necessarily in that order. Every pirate on Arthur Kirkland's ship had learned to grow a healthy fear of the Reavers.

So their gleeful preparations turned into a grim defense of their ship and their lives. If they messed up, they could expect something much worse than death.

Knowing this, Arthur Kirkland made sure that everything was running smoothly, but was tripped up by the fact that his new mechanic was working calmly on what he saw as programming nonsense. "What the bloody hell are you doing?! We're going to be fighting Reavers soon! Are you trying to get killed in an unpleasant manner?! Arthur hissed at the other man.

Alfred glanced back, surprised that the captain had acted so irritated by his actions. As the reluctant mechanic of this vessel, wasn’t it his job to make sure that they could remain stable through the battle? “I thought I was trying to avoid getting killed in an unpleasant manner,” He said, staring meaningfully at the gun strapped to Kirkland’s waist. Honestly, it was impossible to please the man. First he wanted him to work on the ship (or die) and now that suddenly wasn’t the case? And what the hell were Reavers? He may have been a lawman, but he was very young and inexperienced, never having traveled far into the vastness of the galaxy on his own before. Obviously they had to be pretty serious fighters if it got Kirkland’s panties in a twist.

Alfred turned back to the computer, motioning to the map he had brought up of the Dramatic Exit. “I’m monitoring the ship’s activity. If they start firing, I can at control where the shields need to be more heavily concentrated from here,” He explained, pointing to the appropriate keys (not that they meant a thing to the technologically incompetent man). “If the ship does sustain too much damage, I can cut the power in some levels and keep us stable long enough to fight them back. Unless you would prefer me to do something else, captain.” The last word held a bit of spite. After all, he had been kept here, working against his will. He owed this man no allegiance, but for his own safety, he figured his services would be required.

“What would be really nice would be if you had a couple of sonic launchers. Those babies could blow through just about any shield. They suck up a lot of power, but they’re a good investment for when you need to end a fight quickly.” Alfred continued typing away, glancing up every couple of seconds to take in the status of the ship. The initial fighting hadn’t started yet, for that he was grateful. The crewman seemed to have lost their previous excitement for the skirmish, meaning that whoever these Reavers were, they were not an easy fight. The young man chewed his lip nervously and glanced down at his hip where his pistols had once been kept. If somebody where to get on board, he didn’t stand much of a chance against a lazer gun and he could only dodge for so long. Alfred glanced back at the captain, trying not to appear to freaked by the possibility of real combat. “A gun would be nice,” He said simply, nodding meaningfully to the empty spot on his hip.

"You don't know what Reavers are?" Arthur was incredulous. "I'll try to sum it up nicely for you. Ex-people who, if they board us, will kill, rape, and eat us. Preferably in that order, but not likely. Fucking monsters, the lot of them," Captain Kirkland sighed and shook his head. He then reluctantly handed the mechanic a gun.

"I expect this gun to be returned. You will not find any quarter or mercy from the Reavers, so I suggest that you don't turn it on me or my crew. After all, if you want to see what the edge of space does to people, the Reavers are quite the example," Arthur explained.

He glanced around. This engine room was the thing keeping this whole ship moving and filled with oxygen. If it was taken by the Reavers, they would be screwed. Therefore, Arthur was hesitant to leave it in the hands of just Alfred, who would probably have his hands full with dealing with the electronic nonsense. Well then, Arthur supposed an extra pair of hands to beat off any enemies would be quite helpful. He trusted his crew to know what to do in battle, after all this was hardly the first time they had fought, and none of the crew had any plans to be murdered by Reavers, frankly.

"All right, I'll help you defend this spot. Without it, we're all dead," Since Arthur would be on Alfred's side this time, he decided to leave his lack of faith in the other's fighting skills unspoken. Arthur didn't want to be fighting two difficult battles, and neither did he want Alfred to put a bullet in his head when all was said and done. Priorities are quite the lovely things, aren't they?

Alfred fought back the urge to flip the captain off at his disbelieving tone. So what if he didn’t know what the hell Reavers were. He had only just become an officer for the law when he decided it would be a great idea to mess with pirates and wound up in this mess. Excuse him for never having the opportunity to travel around wherever the hell he wanted. “Lovely,” He said simply, taking the gun that Kirkland handed him. He was half tempted to shoot the bastard, but opted out of it simply because it would do him no good at this point. Right now it was in his best interest to keep the ship up and running and not pick start picking fights. If Reavers were as bad as Kirkland said, he would prefer not to meet any of them in combat.

Alfred made a noncommittal noise as he strapped the gun to his waist, turning his full attention back to the monitors before him. The crew had gone into full on defense mode at the moment, obviously trying to avoid anyone from boarding this ship. Alfred typed quickly on the keyboard, doing a quick check to make sure that the shields were up and running properly. Everything was in perfect working condition, yet the silence was setting him on edge. The other ship had made no movement to board save for the initial shot fired to get their attention. What kind of strategy was that? He may not be a military man, but wasn’t the point of an attack to keep it a secret? He frowned and brought up an image of the ship that they were currently on a stand off with. It was nothing to ride home about. The technology looked outdated and barely maintained at best. If they could simply keep them at bay, there was no way they could lose.

A familiar glint of silver caught the mechanics attention, causing his blood to freeze. He had always admired that particular weapons design and had craved to see one in real life for years, but he had never wanted to be on the opposite side of it. “They’re going to blow our shields apart,” He said in disbelief, watching the sonic launcher take aim. Instantly he shot forward, fingers flying as he tried to counteract the inevitable. He had seen what those particular guns could do to a ship, but he wasn’t about to go down without a fight. The crew were firing on the ship now, but to little effect. He cursed and directed the strength of their shields as best he could in the short amount of time, eyes widening as he watched the weapon prepare to fire. Suddenly he was being thrown back, the entire ship shuddering with the force of the impact. He hit the metal railing again, head knocking backing against the wall. “Fuck!”

Alfred raced back to the monitors, typing quickly to gauge the damage. He was thrown back again when sparks flared up from the destruction, the system having shut down. “Dammit. Dammit…” Without the monitors, he had no way of knowing how the rest of the ship was faring or what the Reavers were doing. The sonic launcher had lived up to it’s name though - completely shorting out their system. Without it, they were virtually sitting ducks. Unable to avoid it, Alfred turned to the captain. “They shut us down. I’ll try and boot the system back up, but I can’t guarantee it will work.” He didn’t wait for a response. The younger man had his tools in hand and flipped on his goggles, stepping over the mess of wires to get to the mainframe. Working quickly was essential. He may not care what happens to Kirkland, but he wasn’t looking to become anybody’s meal tonight. With that thought in mind, he set to work.

"Shite, they're going to board us now. You better get those systems up as fast as you can, or we're going to be their next meal! Either that, or you need to get us away from their ship. I don't care if we crash, I'd rather die than fall to them," Arthur frowned. Realizing that this situation would quickly dissolve into fighting crazed Reavers, he began to prepare his numerous weapons. Like the quintessential view of a pirate, Arthur was armed to the teeth.

"I'm going to hold them off as much as I can, so you better do your engineering thing, and do it well. I refuse to be killed in such an undignified manner, and I'm sure you share the same sentiment," Arthur said, in a matter of fact manner. He didn't like having to put some trust in Alfred, but there was no other choice. Arthur didn't know a thing about technology, and Alfred couldn't fight and work at the same time.

Finishing up his preparations, Arthur shut off all but one of the entrances to the room. Using some explosives, he rigged the area of the hall that was located in front of the door with some simple traps. Finally, he slid into a hiding spot not too far from the door. Though it wasn't much, the element of surprise would at least help his chances of survival, and any chance of survival was better than being caught by the Reavers. Though, the dead were sometimes luckier than those who lived. Some survivors were purposefully picked, chosen to watch as their families and friends were brutally abused before slaughtered. Unable to handle the atrocity, those survivors would become Reavers themselves. Arthur didn't intend for that to happen to himself.

All that was left was to wait...

Alfred moved quickly. He was underneath a mess of wires with his tools in hand, cursing under his breath as they sparked angrily at him. Whoever these Reavers were, they certainly knew how to shut down a system. It would take weeks before everything was running properly again, but right now he just had to focus on getting the computers up. Easier said than done. Many of the wires had been all but shorted out, leaving little for him to work with. Everything was either sparking, burnt, or just plain fried - which quickly filled up the small room with rancid smelling smoke. He coughed loudly and hit the light on his goggles. There was nothing for it - he had to try or they would all end up dead.

He picked apart the wires and connections that could still be salvaged and connected them to the main computers, praying that they would hold. There was a little sparking, but nothing too drastic, so he continued. From there he pulled out all the fried pieces and tossed them aside to prevent any further damage before attempting to boot up the computer. There was a jolt of power and for a moment, he could see how the rest of the ship was faring. The shields had been obliterated by the blast, leaving them open to be boarded. From the looks of it, there was a hellish battle going on in the main deck, but he could not gather any specifics before the screen once again went blank. He cursed loudly and began pulling at the wires again.

“Hey Kirkland, they’re coming. If you can buy me a few minutes, I think I can jumpstart this thing and get us out of here before we’re overrun.” First he needed to locate a less unstable source of power. It didn’t have to be much. From what he could remember, they weren’t far from a colonized planet. If they just had enough to get them there, they could worry about repairing the rest of the ship later. Alfred yanked the wires out again, connecting them instead to the power reserves instead. Rushing back over to the computer, he rebooted the system, entire body tense as he waited. If this didn’t work, he wasn’t sure anything would and then they were all doomed. For a minute all he could hear was the sound of his own heartbeat until finally, the computer screen light up. “Yes!”

Alfred’s fingers flew across the keyboard, barely taking in damages or fuel capacity as he maneuvered the ship back away from the Reaver’s. There was no telling how many had managed to board during the time when they’re power had been lost, but at least this way they had a fighting chance. Now if the rest of the crew could fight them back, he could get the ship to safer grounds and deal with the rest of repairs later. He grinned and hunched forward, working on directing the ship as far away from the Reaver’s as possible. They were going to live to see another day. Well, assuming they weren’t killed by the trespassers first.

Captain Kirkland hated to admit it, but Alfred had done an excellent job. He had done what his previous engineer probably would not have been able to do, that is, get the systems back online. Now the only thing between them and survival was whether or not Arthur and his crew could kill the remaining Reavers on their ship. Luckily, killing was a big part of the space pirate career. Then again, killing was the method by which Reavers procured food, clothes, and amusement. Certainly it would be a tough battle, but better than fighting an entire ship of Reavers.

Arthur, impatient as ever, wanted to systematically go through his ship, destroying any Reaver he could find. However, that meant leaving Alfred, the only competent engineer in danger of being brutally murdered, which was not an option. So Arthur had to wait.

Time passed slowly, but eventually Arthur could hear them approaching. There were at least two, maybe three, judging from the footsteps that dragged slightly on the floor, the insane muttering, and the animalistic panting. Arthur could not hold back a shudder of disgust. These Reavers were human no longer, yet it was certainly possible to become one of them. Arthur held his breath as they neared, waiting for them to set of the traps.

The first trap was a simple tripwire, setting off some explosives that knocked the Reavers down (and hopefully seriously injured at least one of them). The explosion was sure to lure more Reavers down so that Arthur wouldn't have to go through the trouble of finding them later on. Though it also left open the possibility that he would be overwhelmed. Either way, Arthur was not in for an easy fight.

He waited until the next trap was sprung before he slid out of his hiding place to use his lazer pistol to start picking the Reavers off. With a trained eye and a cold heart, Arthur's aim was deadly. No Reavers were going to make it off this ship alive, he swore. After all, it would be a lie to say that Arthur wasn't fond of his ship. He was a proud man, and even more proud of The Dramatic Exit. He refused to let it succumb to lowly Reavers.

The sound of explosions brought him back to reality. Alfred tore his fixed gaze away from the computer just long enough to glance behind him. The ships captain was already in heated combat, his acid green eyes staring mercilessly down at the Reavers who had tried to enter. His shots were sparse but they held true, and from the looks of it, he was managing himself alright. Than again, there were only three standing against him.

Alfred turned away and focused back on steering the ship. With quick fingers, he pulled up a map of their current location and began plotting a route to the closest planet. They had an hours worth of travel to make and with the amount of fuel they had lost from the initial blast, he wasn’t sure they would be making it in one piece. Still, it was the best option they had right now. If they managed to land without burning up in the atmosphere, he could worry about repairing the rest of the ship then. Assuming they managed to stay alive long enough to make it the far.

Alfred brought up the visuals from the main deck. The crew was still fighting and looking worse for wear, but they seemed to be holding their own. A number of Reavers were still traveling throughout the ship, no doubt looking for more victims. “More on their way!” He shouted. From the looks of it, a good number had been attracted by the sound of the explosions and were looking for an interesting fight. He cursed silently and glanced back at Kirkland. He might be a hell of a fighter but he could easily be overrun if circumstances went wrong.

He cursed to himself and set the ship on autopilot once the proper route had been coordinated. Once their fuel situation became dire, he would have to take the wheel, but for now, he could help the captain in defense. Alfred reached for the gun he had been given and pocked a few of his more versatile tools before stepping closer to Kirkland. From a distance he could hear the Reavers approaching. He shivered at the sound of a high pitched scream, but didn’t step back. In this case, he was willing to put aside his hatred for the bastard pirate captain and fight in defense of this ship. When the first one came into sight, he took aim and fired without an ounce of hesitation. It was his life or theirs. And in this case, he chose his own.

(( OOC: Please excuse any weirdness in this reply, I've gotten sick, and sometimes that makes me a little... incoherent. ))

Admittedly, Arthur was a bit relieved when he discovered that the other man was fighting on his side. The fact that it wasn't just him against the Reavers was rather comforting, more so than Arthur would have ever liked to admit. So much so that he momentarily forgot about worrying about the other putting a bullet in his back when all was said and done.

That was one of the reasons Arthur was quite surprised when he found himself unable to stand. There had been a shot, coming from the Reavers direction. Arthur was surprised at how close it was, but was forced to look down when he felt himself tumble backwards. He had been shot in the leg. That's when the pain set in.

But Arthur knew he couldn't succumb to this. He had to push himself past the pain, otherwise he'd be killed. Arthur's hand scrambled for his gun, firing at the fast approaching Reavers. Neither the traps nor Alfred's efforts managed to completely hold off the Reavers. A gnarled hand grabbed onto Arthur's outstretched arm, pulling and twisting it to break it, before pushing the pirate captain to the ground.

With a broken arm and a useless leg, Arthur knew that he was little more than dead meat, and he doubted he could count on the new engineer to save him. With his non-dominant arm, he grabbed a dagger from his belt and dug it into the Reaver's side. Pulling the blade out again, Arthur tried to shove the dagger deep into the monstrous creature's ribcage.

Arthur managed to squirm out from the wounded Reaver's body. He could barely think straight, with only two thoughts on his mind, the sheer pain and having to get away. Using his two uninjured limbs, Captain Kirkland dragged himself to a corner of the room, shakily grabbing his gun. He was wounded, vulnerable, and sure he couldn't trust whomever the victor of this battle would be. Even if Alfred managed to triumph, Arthur had a sinking feeling that the other man would take advantage of his vulnerable state

At this moment, Arthur was more a cornered animal than a wounded man. He was ready to shoot anyone who dared get too close.

All the federation training in the world had done little to prepare him from the onslaught. Kirkland was one hell of a fighter, but when a bullet caught him in the leg, he immediately became easy prey. But Alfred had problems of his own at the moment. Being armed with only one gun and a collection of tools left him with little to rely on, especially when three Reavers suddenly rushed him. Unable to rely on the pirate captain to save him, he turned to his only useful asset at the moment - brute force. Alfred caught one of the creatures by the shoulder and tossed it back at the other two with a loud yell. The three landed back against the floor, giving him just enough time to kill two before a knife was slit up his side.

Not giving himself time to focus on the throbbing pain in his torso, he whirled around and thrust the blunt edge of his gun against the deranged creatures skull. “Kirkland!” He shouted, trying to call the pirate to his aid. When nothing of the sort came, he growled angrily and shot another one in the head, his cheek and forehead now bleeding from the blows he had received. When there was a break in the fighting, he whipped his head around, catching sight of the beaten captain, huddling in a corner. His leg and arm hung uselessly, his eyes alight with panic. It was a harsh form of justice for living such a life. Alfred turned his back, ready to let the fates decide how to deal with Kirkland. If he had to guess, it would not treat the captain so kindly.

“Serves you right, you bastard,” He muttered, shooting another Reaver in the skull. Just as he had decided to let the man face death, a strange sort of guilt rose up within him. After everything Kirkland had done to him, he could not in good conscience allow for that kind of blood to be on his hands. Alfred glanced back at the broken pirate captain, silently hating himself for act he was about to commit. It was stupid, would probably end up costing his life, and that damned man wouldn’t even remember him fondly enough to appreciate it - yet he was still going to do it. Damn him for being such a good person.

“Hey you little fuckers!” He shouted, shooting up at the ceiling above to catch the deranged Reaver’s attention. “You want to come play with me?! I’ve still got a whole lot of fight left in me!” He grinned and threw himself at the group, only half registering the bullets and knives that grazed his body. Right now his only focus was to get them as far away from Kirkland and this room as possible. Using all the power he had, Alfred shoved the remaining intruders out of the control room. Already his body was starting to shut down from blood loss from the gashes on his side, but he did not quit. When the pathway is clear, he slammed his elbow back against the control box by the door. He flashed the pirate a grin and a mock salute as multiple arms reached out to grasp his form. “Later asshole. Try to keep yourself alive, okay?!” The door shut between them just as he was pulled into the throng of Reavers.

'That bastard' was the only thought on Captain Kirkland's mind as the other got pulled into the group of Reavers.

Of course the other man had to show up the pirate and prove himself to be trustworthy (and stupid) enough to sacrifice himself. Arthur felt like a stupid coward, and that was absolutely unacceptable to him. The pirate captain refused to lose to both the Reavers and Alfred F. Jones. After all, there was time to rest when Arthur was dead.

Letting out a constant stream of curse words to keep himself aware, Arthur took off his precious jacket and started ripping it apart, creating makeshift bandages for his wounds. He had to hurry, otherwise he wouldn't arrive in time to make sure that bastard Alfred didn't die.

Pulling himself up with his good arm, Arthur began to drag himself towards the door, his injured leg and arm trailing behind him. "Fucking bastard thinks he can go off and die on his own... I should be the one who kills him, not those damn Reavers," Arthur angrily mumbled to himself, followed by another stream of curse words.

Arthur angrily pounded on the control box, opening the door so he could reach out and grab the other man with his one good arm. The curse words flowing from his mouth hadn't stopped. Arthur was angry, in pain, and just trying to stay conscious. Arthur knew he had to close the door as soon as the other man was in the room, even if it meant he had to jab the controls with his broken arm.

What felt like a thousand pair of hands grasped his body, pulling, yanking, ripping, and crushing whatever they could get a hold of. Knives found their way into his sides, ripping up the already torn flesh with their jagged surfaces. Alfred was descending into a world of pain and dizziness, but still he fought on with everything he had. If he was going to die saving that asshole Kirkland, he wasn’t going to go down without giving these deranged lunatics the fight of a life. For every bullet, cut, scratch, and break he sustained, Alfred returned in kind to the first creature he got his hands on. “Come on! Is this the best you can do?!” He shouted, slamming the butt of his gun against another one’s skull.

To the side of him, the metal door he had previously closed between him and control room suddenly shot open, revealing a half mangled and extremely pissed off captain on the other side. Had Alfred been a little less preoccupied with not immediately getting killed by the insane Reavers, he might have been more surprised that Kirkland was even bothering to try and help him. But in the heat of the moment, all he could do was flash him a quick, equally irritated glance before managing to shoot one of the creatures in the shoulder. “What the hell are you doing?! I’m giving you a chance to save yourself! Can’t you just fucking take it and be grateful?!” He snapped, crying out as one of the attackers dug it’s fingernails deep within the open wound along his shoulder. “Fuck!”

Now that the door was no longer blocking their pathway, the Reavers began advancing on the pirate captain again. Alfred cursed loudly and threw his weight on them to hold them off. Damn pirates - couldn’t they just be grateful and move on?! Why the hell did they have to make everything so damn complicated? Once the pathway was relatively clear, Alfred threw himself back and grabbed Kirkland’s good hand. “Close the door!” He shouted, clutching the captain’s hand as if his life depended on it. Which, in some roundabout way that he barely understood, was probably the case.

Arthur didn't even bother responding to the other man, after all, there would be ample time to yell at the other later, whether it be in hell or when the Reavers were gone. When the other man grabbed his hand, Arthur grabbed the wrist, pulling the engineer into the room with all his might. Once the other man was inside, Arthur used the shoulder of his bad arm to close the door.

Arthur barely allowed himself a sigh of relief before started yelling at the man, gently sliding to the floor since he was otherwise unable to hold himself up for much longer.

"A chance to save myself?!" Arthur let out a harsh laugh, "You were just trying to turn yourself into a self-sacrificing prat for no damn reason! I never told you that you could just go and do that! Make me look like a fucking coward! You would get to die a hero's death, while I get saddled with the consequences of your reckless behavior. Fuck you." Arthur snarled. The only thing keeping him conscious was just how pissed off at Alfred he was.

The pirate captain tried to ignore the sounds of the Reavers scratching at the doors. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, he wondered how long that door would hold up, and if any of his crew was left.

"You had no right to save me. Besides, with these wounds and no medical care, what were you going to save? A corpse?"

Alfred breathed a sigh of relief when the door closed between the Reavers and them. He knew that it wouldn’t be long before they found a way inside, but for now he allowed himself this brief moment to rest. The young man leaned heavily against the wall opposite Kirkland, working on catching his breath before worrying about anything else. But of course, the damned pirate couldn’t allow him even that pleasure and immediately began to yell at him for his rash actions.

“Well fuck you too. You’re lucky I even bothered to try and save your sorry ass ‘captain’! You force me into a situation no better than slavery and expect me to willingly comply to all your fucking needs and wants?! At least in death, I would have been free of you!” He snapped, pulling off his already mangled shirt, ripping it into strips for the worst of his wounds. A soft hiss escaped passed his tightly pressed lips as he tightened his make-shift bandages. It wouldn’t be long before he lost consciousness, and from there it was a short jump to death. What a waste of a life.

Alfred tilted his head towards the screens that were still up and tracking their progress across space, a hand lightly moving up to graze a spot just below the back of his neck. The mark of ownership was still tattooed along his skin from his childhood - back when he really was a slave. He had sworn the moment he was free that no one in the world would take that away from him again; not when he still had breath left in his body.

The young engineer dropped his hand and glanced around the small room, mind whirling. He wasn’t going to die here. He refused to die like this. Stumbling forward, he grabbed his tool belt off the main computer and slid to the floor. “Yo, asshole. Got any more of those bombs on you?” He asked as he snapped his goggles over his eyes, already working to undo the underside cartridge from the weapon. This plan was a long shot, but if he could work quickly and carefully enough, it might be enough to at least rid them of the Reavers outside. Alfred fought back his dizziness, focusing solely on the task before him. With slightly shaking hands, he took out his smallest pair of tweezers and removed a tiny, glowing tube from it’s metal casing. He raised it up for the captain to see, grinning. “We’re going to blow those bastards to kingdom come.”

We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... This Land. [Kirk + Sheriff] - Page 2 Empty Re: We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... This Land. [Kirk + Sheriff]

"Freedom is a lie... One is always a slave to power, money, or the wants of others. There's no escaping it. If one has power, one is a slave to the responsibilities that come with it. If one has no power, then you're a slave to those who have more power. It's just the way this universe works," Arthur explained. His view on this was unsurprising, considering he went from an upper middle class family to the military, and then to piracy. Certainly he had not experienced true slavery, but neither had he experienced true freedom. The pirate doubted the latter existed, and didn't bother to think much upon the former. "Death isn't even freedom. It's nothing but a load of trouble."

Arthur had never bothered to glance at the back of the other man's neck, not even thinking to look for a slave tattoo. Yet, it wouldn't mean much to the pirate. He would probably offer a few words of pity and apology, but nothing more. He had never experienced something like that, and was unable to empathize or even understand what slaves go through.

"It's Captain Kirkland to you, and of course I have one left. After all, dire situations like this generally call for plan Bs that are assisted by explosives," Arthur let out a weak chuckle. He pulled out the last bit of explosives he had, holding it out with his good arm. It was possible for Arthur to stand up, but he wanted to preserve what little energy he had left.

When the other suggested blowing the Reavers to pieces, Arthur couldn't help but return a dark smirk. He was pleased by the thought of murdering the insane creatures who were destroying his ship and nearly killed him. "Then what are we waiting for? These balls of scum need to meet their maker, do they not?"

Alfred’s brow furred him confusion at the sudden change it atmosphere. He had expected more yelling or reprimanding for his brash actions, maybe even another acidic glare, but not this. Such a dark view on life, even for a man who has probably traveled around and seen horrors that the engineer couldn’t even begin to understand. Still, Alfred could not help but feel pity. “That’s pretty morbid coming from the guy pulling all the strings,” He said finally, pausing his work long enough to flash the pirate captain a uncertain look. “But you’re wrong.”

He reached forward and took the last of the explosives from the pirate captain, setting aside the glowing tube to be used later. With practiced hands, he clipped two tiny red wires and pulled up on the small, plastic surfacing. “Real freedom isn’t defined by things like power and money,” He continued as he worked, “It can’t be stolen, or bought, or destroyed, despite what you say. Every person is as free as they wish to be.” Alfred snapped the tube he had taken from his gun into the small opening he had made, grinning as he connected one of the wires he snapped. “You may be the captain of this ship, but I have freedom over myself.”

When the device was completed, Alfred shakily stood up and glanced at the pirate. “Now ‘captain’,” He said, holding up the newly modified explosive. “I’ve wasted too much effort to have you die in the blast from this explosion. You’re going to need to move as far away from this door as possible. Believe me, you don’t want to be caught to close,” He warned, lightly fingering the still loose wire. When it connected, there wouldn’t be much time to react before the combined elements from the original explosive and his gun became unstable. Those bastards at the door didn’t stand much of a chance, but if he didn’t move quickly enough, neither did he.

"Pulling all the strings? You give me too much credit, not even I am that powerful or perfect. I'm sorry to say that most of the reason I've survived this long is simply luck," Arthur chuckled a bit, trying to sound like he wasn't in pain as he pulled himself up again and hobbled away from the door. He wasn't able to make it particularly far, but he hoped it was far enough.

"There is no such thing as true freedom. It's just blind optimism. Power and money, those are what define such an illusory concept such as freedom. If you have no power or money, then why bother keeping up the illusion? You can't do a damn thing without power or money. What kind of 'freedom' is that?" Arthur let out a grumpy snort, settling down into his new resting spot.

The pirate captain was quickly growing weary, despite the constant throbbing of his wounds. It all hurt so much, but the pain seemed to make him sleepy, rather than keep him awake. Arthur was surprised he had made it this far, and knew if he let himself sleep, he probably wouldn't wake up. So, he clung to focusing on Alfred and their conversation. It was either that or the pain from his wounds.

"Just smoke those bloody fuckers out." Arthur grumbled irritably, feeling impatient.

Alfred watched as the man struggled to his feet and moved away from the door. What a stubborn asshole - not even bothering to ask for help when he clearly needed it. Had it been anybody else, the young engineer would have stepped in and assisted without waiting to be asked. But with Kirkland he was more than likely to get a knife in the back for such an action, so he restrained himself.

“I never said you were particularly powerful or perfect, but you must believe that you have some control over your own fate,” He responded, leaning heavily against the wall beside the control box. On the other side of the door, he could hear the heavy pounding and scratches of the Reavers, working to find a way in. He smiled without any real humor and lightly fingered the device in his hands. Just a bit longer and he would make his move. “You’re still wrong,” Alfred replied, not even bothering to look at him. “Freedom is the power to determine action or thought without restraint. If money is the only thing keeping you from achieving what you want, that’s rather superficial. Especially for a pirate.”

At the pirate’s demand, he turned and flashed the man a grin combined with another mocking salute. “Aye aye captain.” Without wasting another second, he connected the last wire with his thumb and shoved his shoulder against the control box, opening up the door. Alfred threw the small device into the throng of Reavers at the same time as he hit the button to bring the door back down to it’s previous stance. There wasn’t any time for him to do much else besides turn his back before the explosion. The metal door was blasted open as blue flames erupted just outside. He was thrown to the ground with the force of the explosion, a slab of heavy metal from the door and part of the wall came crashing down on top of him. All he could hear were the high-pitched wails of the Reavers that survived the initial blast as they were incinerated into dust.

Alfred could no longer move. The weight of the metal kept him pinned to the ground, and his previous wounds made it impossible to even think about trying to escape. Oddly though, he felt at peace. His device must have done the trick, for there wasn’t any sign of Reavers rushing into finish the job. He grinned like a moron, even as blood trickled down from the back of his head. Letting out a painful chuckle, Alfred rested his forehead against the floor and allowed himself to finally close his eyes in exhaustion. Within seconds, his world faded away into unconsciousness.

Arthur chuckled once more and shook his head, "You truly fail to understand me. There are simply two things I want, survival and power. Everything else tends to let you down."

After a short pause, the explosion occurred. Arthur tried to shield his face with his good arm, after all, his arm wouldn't be much use if his face had been blown off. When things settled down, Arthur coughed a bit to get the smoke and debris out of his lungs. That had been a nasty explosion, and hopefully nasty enough to kill the Reavers. Everything was quiet, too quiet.

The pirate heard a faint chuckle from Alfred, so he turned his head to check on the other man. His eyes widened when he saw the other crushed under a large piece of metal. "Alfred, you arse! If you die like that, I'll kill you! I swear it!" Arthur snarled. Unable to stand up, Arthur drug himself across the floor.

"You stupid berk! You can't just leave me like this!" Arthur continued to berate the unconscious man. He grasped the metal with his good arm and tried to shove it off the other. Unfortunately, Arthur wasn't particularly strong even in the best of health, so the injured man had no effect on the object crushing his engineer.

Exhaustion set in, and Arthur's cursing slowed and quieted down. Soon, Arthur was reduced to just breathing softly and leaning against the side of the metal plate. The last thing Arthur saw before losing consciousness was the approaching feet of what remained of his crew. Recognizing a certain pair of well kept shoes, Arthur passed out with these words, "You're late... fucking frog..."

The first thought that crossed Alfred’s mind when he resurfaced into the conscious world was that it was too damn bright. He wrinkled his nose and tried to bring an arm up to cover his face from the offending light, but found that his body would not move. Trying to figure out what was hindering his movements, he opened his clear blue eyes and looked around. He was alone in a room he had never seen before. The walls were completely white and large light was hanging over his head. To the right of him was a small metal table holding only what appeared to be a type of plant that he had never seen before. All in all, it was not a very large room. But it was quiet, and that was more than the usual ruckus he was used to on the ship.

Alfred sighed and tired to sit up, only to let out a loud gasp at the sudden pain that shot through his body. After giving himself a second to prepare, he raised his head slightly and looked down. Nearly his entire torso was in bandages and his arms and legs were not in a much better state. An I.V. stuck out from the soft flesh within his left arm and was attached to a bag of fluids that was hung above him. He dropped his head back against the pillow and groaned. His body ached in ways that he never would have believed possible, but it was relieving in a way. At least he knew he wasn’t dead.

Kirkland. He suddenly remembered the explosion, the Reavers, and everything else that had transpired in that control room. Where the hell was Kirkland? Had he died? No, he couldn’t be dead otherwise his crew wouldn’t have bothered to patch him up. Still, where was he? Probably still cursing and bitching about not getting his way somewhere. Such a stubborn asshole. Alfred grinned a bit and tilted his head slightly to watch the door, silently willing for someone to walk in and assure him that the bastard pirate captain had indeed survived. A pain in his side prompted another groan to slip passed his lips, but he didn’t look away from the door. He had spent far too much energy keeping that man alive and he wanted to be sure his efforts hadn’t been wasted.

"C'est une chanson qui nous ressemble.
Toi, tu m'aimais et je t'aimais
Et nous vivions tous les deux ensemble,
Toi qui m'aimais, moi qui t'aimais~
"

Francis leisurely strolled into the room, singing a song. After all, he had had a lovely lunch with a bottle of wine, and his good friends Antonio and Gilbert. In the time that Alfred had been unconscious, the ship had managed to dock on a nearby planet so they could make repairs. That's when they met up with the albino mercenary who had another job for them.

The medic paused for a moment when he noticed that his patient was awake. Yet, Francis did not suddenly flock over to Alfred to fuss over him. There was ample time for him to check on the other man. As slowly as before, Francis stepped towards the engineer.

"Mon chou~ You are awake! This is good, n'est-ce pas? With that giant piece of metal crushing you, we feared you might be dead. But 'ere you are, alert and awake! Though I must thank you, you have managed to keep the Captain quiet for a good few days!" Francis laughed a bit, leisurely checking on Alfred and making sure the other's wounds had not opened up or gotten infected.

"Now, down to business, you 'ave been asleep for nearly a week. 'ow are you feeling?"

Alfred was half tempted to force himself into a sitting position when the flamboyant blond strolled into the room, but the dull throbbing in his side convinced him otherwise. He instead resolved himself to stay laying still, waiting for the singing man to notice him (he didn’t quite trust his voice either). Thankfully he didn’t have long to wait. Within moments, Francis to notice his conscious state and stepped forward to look him over. His exclamations of joy did little more than inspire a headache to build behind his tired eyes, but the bit about the captain caught his attention. “He’s alive then?” He managed to say, his voice slightly hoarse from it’s extended rest period.

Good, that asshole had made it after all. Not that he had really been too concerned - that guy was way too stubborn to die so easily. Still, the thought made him smile a bit as he settled his head back against the pillow. It would have been a tragedy if the damnable pirate captain had died before he got a chance to prove him wrong about his demented view on freedom.

Francis’s question pulled him back to reality. “Just peachy,” He replied with a bit of a grin, watching as the other man checked over his wounds. He had been stabbed, shot at, and nearly crushed to death - how did this jerk think he felt? Wait a minute, a week? He had been out of commission for a week? Why the hell wasn’t Kirkland here hounding him to get to work on the ship already? Usually the bastard was on his ass night and day fixing the ships odds and ends, no matter how Alfred himself felt about it.

The engineer began pushing himself up into a sitting position, groaning at the sharp flashes of pain cut through his torso. Man, those Reaver bastards had done some serious damage - usually he healed up pretty quickly. “I need to get to work. He’s going to be pissy if I don’t get this ship up and running soon.”

"Ah non~ Do not worry about working. Ze captain... 'e has other things to worry about. You, on the other hand, need to rest and get better, non? In your state, you will not be able to do much work anyways," Francis gently forced the other man to lay down again.

After examining Alfred some more, Francis decided an extra dose of painkiller would do the other man some good. It would numb the pain, and probably keep the other from moving around too much and reopening his wounds. If the other didn't reopen his wounds, it meant less work for Francis, and more time for charming the people of this planet. He wondered if he could find a lovely girl to share his bed with for a night or two. Francis sighed wistfully, love was such a beautiful thing.

"Do not worry about the Captain preoccupying himself with you. 'e hasn't woken up, and when he does he will be... distracted juste un peu" Francis winked at Alfred. "If you are concerned, you are welcome to visit 'im when you are able to get up and move about. Trés mignon! I did not realize you had grown so attached to him." Francis teased Alfred a bit, going so far as to gently pinch the other man's cheek.

Alfred winced when he was pushed back down onto the bed. As much as he hated how weak his body felt right now, he agreed with the medic’s statement about resting. It wouldn’t do anybody much good if he passed out on the job, so he opted to settled back down onto the bed and stay still as Francis finished checking over his wounds. He stared down at his bandaged torso, irritation reading clearly on his face when he realized that it would be some time before he could move around normally. That damn pirate better be grateful for all he did for him.

Francis’s next statement forced him back to the harsh reality of the situation. Kirkland hadn’t awoken yet. Were his wounds really that severe? He had thought he had managed to keep him from becoming too injured during the battle - perhaps he had been more hurt than Alfred had originally believed. Despite how much he wanted to deny it, a spark of panic washed over him. “What do you mean he’s not awake? How come?” Damnit, he better not die after all the effort he put into saving his life! That would be unacceptable! However, Francis’s comment about him being distracted was even more concerning. Alfred frowned up at the older man. “Distracted by what?” Whether the creepy medic liked it or not, he was (technically) a member of this crew. As the unwilling engineer of this vessel, he deserved to know what was happening.

Alfred nearly choked when he realized what the medic was implying. “I don’t give a damn about that bastard!” He managed to say, voice cracking from the sudden change in pitch. His cheeks went red from embarrassment about implication that he would ever want to sleep the captain (let alone Francis - ugh) and he brought a hand up to slap away the medics fingers. Damned pirates, why were they so obsessed with sex all the time?

“No thanks,” He mumbled in response to Francis’s kind offer. “Now can you get out so I can rest?” He paused for a moment before glancing away from the blonds prying gaze. “I’ll go see your captain later -when I can move again. But let me know if he wakes up.”
