Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by King of Spades Fri Sep 30, 2011 2:29 pm

The new century smelled of future. Everything was born anew. New culture, new politics, new people. And at the centre of this metamorphosis was Paris. The modern Babylon did they call this city.

But Alfred Jones preferred to call Paris a flower.

Because really, what else would one call a city with flourishing minds and dreamful artists breaking out of the frame to create a new definition of art? What else would one call a city with such a lively nightlife that was laced with culture and with a distinctive taste of dreams and ideas coming true.

And then there was Moulin Rouge.

The new entertainment, it was as shady as it was fascinating. The young musician from New Orleans was drawn by the music, colours, dancing and women.
He hadn't been very long in Paris but he'd quickly found himself to be a regular.

It was the beginning of late night and he could already spot the red mill on Boulevard de Clichy from afar, excitement grew the closer he was.

Entering the establishment it was already crowded and the cabaret was demonstrating a new show. But it wasn't yet time for the main attraction that night. So he sat down with an expectant smile. The table next to his was occupied by Joseph Oller and Monsieur Toulouse-Latrec who were seemingly advanced in a heated discussion.

Alfred ordered a drink with his broken French, him being a man of no great linguistic talent. And it was times like these, when communication was on the verge of failing, that he truly missed America. But in the end he still managed to get his drink and all was forgotten.

Now, when will Mistinguett make her excellent performance?

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

His parents had warned him plenty before he travelled over to Paris. They said his idea was a naïve one, but as an author, Arthur Kirkland was always looking for new inspirations and new ideas to write down. So, surely the city that was bursting with wonderful new arts, music, and romance was a place for such inspirations. It had already inspired so many people to follow their dreams and bring their arts to the public, so why not him as well?

His father said he would simply fall into the traps of the women who were there to lure men, young and old, with their beauty and charms. Arthur disregarded the comment, saying that was not his reason for going. His father simply shook his head, mumbling as he walked off.

Arthur promised it wouldn’t happen. But having it being introduced by an acquaintance here in Paris, the Moulin Rouge made that quite difficult.

It was here that Arthur became enthralled with one woman, and so he had arrived once again to see Mistinguett’s famous performance.

The Moulin Rouge was as always, greatly alive with dancers and music. The sights and sounds were enough to draw any man in and create a great excitement. Having learnt the French language at school, ordering a drink wasn’t an issue. After doing so, he set about looking for a table, which was proving to be difficult in the crowd. Arthur spotted the owner of the establishment, Mr Joseph Oller, in a discussion with someone and then an empty table on the other side of them.

He walked past a fellow with blonde hair and glasses (and wearing that look that graced most of the guests of the Moulin Rouge) , then Joseph Oller and his guest. He then finally settled at the empty table, watching the current show and waiting for the star performer to take stage.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

The Moulin Rouge was starting to fill as the night evolved, they all came for the same reason. That charming lady was about to grace them with her theatrical singing, which was always a flamboyant spectacle. Alfred rose the glass to his lips and took a sip from his brandy, letting the burn warm up his spirit to see the actress. He barely noticed the man with strong and thick eyebrows passing his table.

Other than most guests, he didn't come with company tonight. In fact, he had none to go out with. Being an artist in Paris was paradise but also an existential challenge, where one had to constantly prove himself to be good enough, avant-garde enough. And Alfred was really determined to join those clubs of artists in which gentlemen meet and debate over their works and let imagination evolve into graspable beauty.

But alas, and Alfred sighed into his glass, he was only a young inexperienced musician who barely spoke French. He wanted to make new music, music that would give this world a lighthearted breeze, a youthful metamorphosis. However, the respected artists were the authors and painters. Only operettas were considered fine art in the musical branch; those could be considered the last glorious breath of the classical world.

Alfred simply knew that it was time for new music, something revolutionary. Any other kind of music was considered non-serious, like cabaret or salon music. But Alfred thought that nothing was wrong with simple melodies as long as they were able to stir people's beings in whichever way. And Alfred wanted to create new music, easy for the ear but with a rich sound that would explode in a climax of genius.

And it was going to be art.

The young musician chuckled at his own grand dream. Yeah, he was going to be one hell of revolutionary musician.

At that very moment, the heavy curtains were lifted and the lights point at one single person. Mistinguett.

"Oh well, love comes first, then music history."

Post by Preffy~ Thu Oct 13, 2011 9:11 am

The curtains had lifted and the light pointed at that beautiful star of the show. The music then started to one of Mistinguett's popular songs.

Here was a woman that Arthur knew many dreamt of winning the affection of, himself included. She had a certain allure, and she knew how to draw in her crowds with her routines and her voice. As always, she was wearing one of her flamboyant feathery headdresses and dressed to impress and certainly keep all attention upon her.

Arthur glanced around before returning his gaze to the stage, smiling at Mistinguett with admiration as he did so, not one person was turned away from the stage. His memories of first seeing her were filling his mind as he listened to her sing, the feelings of being immediately drawn in. Ideas and thoughts of romance were born just by seeing her.

Somewhere at the back of his mind, Arthur registered his fathers words again. But they were quickly drowned out by the crowds applause as Mistinguett finished her first song. Arthur stood to give his own applause of appreciation, but as he did, he was reminded that he was not the only one smitten.

One thing he was sure about. He was in love.

How foolish can one man be to be in love with an idol so unreachable and yet nothing could stop him to desire her. Every other man was content to watch her from afar, Alfred however was no ordinary man. He was the golden boy from New Orleans, and if he had brought anything beside an aftertaste of civil war then it was definitely his youthful brilliance and daring personality.

Once Mistinguett had retreated into her changing room Alfred rose, trying to be discreet and not draw any attention. There had to be some way to reach her changing room unnoticed as he hadn't seen many men guarding her. They were relying on the gentlemanly attitude of her admirers. Well, too bad Alfred wasn't the classical gentleman.

He wasn't going to force himself on her, not at all. All he wanted to do was give her a present.

Gathering his courage he downed his drink in one go and stalked away from his own table, trying to be nonchalant.

Nonchalant or not, he still managed to bump against another chair. It was occupied by a man slightly older than him and with eyebrows of strong character. "I'm sorry," apologised Alfred with a nervous tone.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by Preffy~ Sun Oct 23, 2011 11:31 am

Arthur still stood, applauding Mistinguett as she retreated to her changing room. How he wished he could go back there and talk to her, but he considered himself a gentleman, and gentleman did not intrude upon ladies in their dressing rooms.

Eventually he sat down, had a sip of his drink, and started to think of ways he would be able to just meet the women who took his breath away, every time he came to see her.

It was during this thought process, that someone bumped into the side of his chair. Arthur then heard a distracted, nervous and very American accented apology thrown his way. He turned to say it was no problem… It tended to happen a lot here after all. But all he saw of the mystery American, was the back of his blonde hair as he walked away.

Walked away, heading towards the place Arthur knew led towards the changing rooms.

Towards Mistinguett maybe?

Arthur’s expression turned to one of suspicion as he watched the man continue on his way. Surely, he wasn’t going to disturb the lady?. Arthur stood with the intention of following, to make sure that wasn’t his intention. The brief admiration he felt for this man and his nerve to approach Mistinguett was quickly squashed, by the determination to make sure that didn’t happen.

As he got closer, it was clear that the guy was definitely heading in the direction of the back rooms. Honestly, where was the security in this place! Well, I’ll have to do the job myself then, won’t I! Arthur thought to himself, and he walked a little faster to catch up with the man.

Fully intent on saving the lovely Mistinguett from this nuisance.

Alfred was almost there, he could already see the star room. On fate's will, the only man on watch out was distracted by another performance, so Alfred could sneak himself past him. With a triumphant grin and a racing heart he grabbed onto the handle to open the door. He only wanted to offer a present, no harm intended.

Almost, really, it was too good to be true. Of course it was too good to be true, because at the exact same moment he felt a hand grabbing his shoulder and pulling him back. Alfred cursed. He was so close.

Without further ado the hands were held up in surrender. If he was lucky, he would only be kicked out and not be arrested, or worse yet, to be banned from the Moulin Rouge.

But the face starring at him was not the security, it was the gentleman with those huge eyebrows, and upon closer inspection also with the most intense green eyes ever, glaring at him.

"Oh, hi Monsieur," He said in an appeasing tone. "A-are you also heading for the lady's star room?"

Post by Preffy~ Wed Nov 02, 2011 10:05 am

The man had reached the door and grabbed the door handle, when Arthur rushed forward and grabbed his shoulder before he could get any further. He glared as the man raised his hand in a sign of surrender and turned round to face him.

The man looked rather youthful, a couple of years younger than himself maybe? His nervous bright blue eyes were framed with glasses. Looking him over, Arthur deduced he was the kind that would gain any woman’s attention, maybe even Mistinguett herself. This thought only irritated him more.

“No, Monsieur” He replied, his tone quiet so as not to draw attention. Not that that was going to happen, poor security and all that. “And neither are you. Surely, you don’t mean to interrupt the lady while she has a moment of peace?”

However, his gaze kept returning to the door as he realised just how close he was, to being able to meet and speak with the woman he had admired, all the months he had been in Paris.

Well, seemed like Mr Eyebrows was related to Mr Tightass and was running around to kill joy on a daily basis. Alfred, though, raised one brow as he caught the other's stolen glances past his shoulder to the closed door. "Ya want to go in," said Alfred matter of factly in English. The smirk that was starting to form around the corners of his lips were too hard to hide.

He would have preferred to go alone, a sudden rival to fight for Mistinguett's attention was not what the American wanted. But he had no choice but to bargain with the other man. "C'mon we can both meet her, there's no way you'd pass on this opportunity! This chance..." Alfred bent down a little bit and reduced his voice into a whisper. "This chance is every man's dream!"

Hoping to the heavens that the other would give in, he held his breath in anticipation. And also, if he was lucky, the other guy would be happy with just meeting Mistinguett, without any further intentions like him.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by Preffy~ Tue Nov 08, 2011 1:23 pm

As much as the taller man was annoying him, with his annoyingly playful smirk, everything he was saying had some truth to it. Beyond that door was Mistinguett, and right now he had the opportunity of meeting her. Arthur was well aware of amount of attention and declarations of love she received, but for now, if only he could get this fellow out of the way….

No. He wouldn’t do that. No matter what he couldn’t go against his own stance of being a gentleman, and most certainly wouldn’t intrude upon the lady. But he also had to think… what was this man's intention with Mistinguett? Sneaking off to the back of the rooms, making sure not to draw attention to himself. If he couldn’t dissuade him, then what?

“ While I do agree that it is a great opportunity indeed, what makes you think that at the sight of two unknown men appearing at her door will not make her call security, hm?” He replied, his own voice only a whisper as well. “Men have gotten kicked out for forming the same ideas as you. So what were you planning to do? Woo her with sweet words that I’m sure she has heard a million times?”

Alfred blinked at the obviously Englishman. It was as if his words were so outlandish that he didn't quite understand what was so relevant about the things the other had said. "Isn't it obvious? I'll enter the room and she'll fall in love with me. I don't see the problem there."

Besides he wasn't going to woo her, he was going to invade her heart in a rush. American style.
Romeo managed to win Juliet's heart with serenading and Alfred was going to win Mistinguett's heart with a song solely written for her.

"So, now that the problem is solved, can we go in now? You can be my sidekick and eventually shake her hand. Not more though, cause she's gonna be mah wife."

Post by Preffy~ Sat Nov 12, 2011 2:46 pm

Arthur stared at the other with disbelief, then after a moment, let out a small snort.

“Fall in in love with you? Just like that?” He said, with heavy sarcasm in his voice! “My, you are sure of yourself aren’t you?” Arthur was silently seething… shake her hand? No more though? Arrogant prat! Arthur was under the impression they were rivals, but this man didn’t seem to think anything of him or any true rivalry.

Well, he wasn’t going to give up. He could be very charming if he wanted to, and Mistinguett was certainly someone to charm.

“But, if you are determined… I will go with you. NOT as your sidekick” The last word was said with distaste, as he moved to the side and hinted that he would knock and bother the poor lady, not that he wasn‘t excited at the idea of meeting her of course, “And if you think that I’m settling for a handshake and no more, then you are sadly mistaken sir! Face it, I’m a rival and I’m not going to make it easy for you!”

A smirk had fully formed as he watched the American for his reaction.

He couldn't believe the Englishman's words, it was like a surprising blow right in his face; it was painful but for some reason Alfred didn't feel outraged. A bit threatened, a bit awed; that's how he felt at the very moment. Did he just declare war against him? How bold of someone who had intended to make Alfred act like a proper gentleman.

And now the man was pushing down the handle, making Alfred panic for a moment. He wasn't ready for such a turn of event, nor had he taken into account that a rival would appear and take the lead, practically stealing it from his hands.

That was unacceptable.

But the door was slowly being pushed open; the light from the dressing room shone through the small opened gap. It was about to be widely opened but before it could happen, Alfred grabbed onto the other man's arm and stared at him intently.

"Tell me your name!"

Arthur lightly closed the door, so as not to attract attention from the occupant inside, and returned the stare he was being given. The slight irritation of the man grabbing his arm was quickly removed, as he pulled his arm away from the mans grasp. But now he was grinning in success, as it seemed the other had realised that he wouldn’t back down too easily.

The grin was quickly replaced with a polite smile. “May I give you a small bit of advice, sir? If you’re going to go and try to gain a lady’s favour, it is advisable you learn manners. You know… words such as please!” The polite smile seemingly less polite, with the mocking tone his voice seemed to have taken.

“But,” Arthur said, standing a little straighter, “My name is Arthur Kirkland. May I have your name please?” Again, that grin returned. “Do you see how I used those manners there?”

Why was that guy so annoying? And why did he suddenly sound like a big mouthed asshole? "Are...are you trying to - lecture me?! Sorry, dad...no way!" But one thing he did admit, Arthur Kirkland had more balls than what one might think. First impressions meant nothing, huh?

Though he couldn't help but feel pissed off by that sudden cocky attitude. So he frowned and only answered as not to appear as the weaker of the two. "Name is Alfred - Alfred Ferdinand Jones." Then he added through gritted teeth, "Nice to meet you, Arthur."

Arthur. Not Mr Kirkland. Alfred smirked.

He then pushed himself past Arthur before the other could even get the chance to protest. The moment he stepped through the threshold, he overstepped a forbidden barrier.

And behind it was Mistinguett, seemingly glowing, a misplaced star in this worn world. She looked at the two intruding gentlemen with surprise in her eyes.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by Preffy~ Thu Nov 17, 2011 1:58 pm

All hint of a sarcastic comment or retort seemed to have disappeared. Arthur stood just outside the now open room, and quickly moved so he wasn’t standing behind Alfred, moved so he could see the breathtaking woman inside the room.

The look of surprise was clear, but Arthur could understand that and for a moment feared that Mistinguett would call some form of security and have them removed. But a look of understanding seemed to cross her lovely face. Arthur had been staring at her with nothing but awe, and Alfred must have been doing the same thing… seeing as Mistinguett seemed to understand quickly what it was those looks of awe meant.

“I apologize for our rude interruption!” Arthur said quickly, he wasn’t sure which he was feeling more; nervous or excited. But he also felt admiration as Mistinguett seemed more amused than afraid of the two unknown men entering her room unannounced. Was she used to her admirers doing such things? Or simply so unused to it that this new turn of events amused her?

“May I help you?” She spoke in English, but of course her accent was very clear. Arthur glanced over to Alfred briefly before controlling his nerves to speak again. Knowing very well that Alfred would wake from his stupor very soon.

“We-I wished to meet you in person….”

"You? Dude, I beg to fucking differ! I was here first!" Alfred pushed Arthur aside, though careful not to apply too much strength, and grinned widely at the celebrity in front of him. Finally!

She chuckled lightly. "You've seen me now, anything else?"

The American's heart raced, this was the chance to do what a man gotta do. So he nervously grabbed into the pocket of his suit, trembling hands pulled out a piece of paper. "I...I'd like to write a song for you. It's not yet finished but...I just wanted to make sure that you're going to listen to it...once it's finished." A warm blush spread over his cheeks and he carefully looked up to see Mistinguett's reaction.
"I, this is a completely new kind of music! It has a rich sound, a melody made of several instruments! But not too grand like an orchestra...but smaller, more casual and...modern!"

She smiled at him. This guy was quite cute. Maybe she should humour him. A new kind of music sounded interesting enough. "How could I say no to such a wonderful present!"

Alfred's sky blue eyes beamed and his smile could only grow.

Mistinguett will definitely fall for him!

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by Preffy~ Sat Nov 19, 2011 8:41 am

After the brief shove that Alfred had given him, Arthur wanted to curse the American, but instead stood back and watched the interaction between him and Mistinguett. He wanted to write a song for her? How… original.

But Mistinguett seemed to like that idea, or she was just still amused by them both. He couldn’t tell.

Wonderful.

But Arthur was not going to give up, so once again turned and snorted at Alfred’s expression. The git thought he had actually won this battle already. “Oh please, the only reason you were here before me is because I had to follow to make sure you weren’t going to cause any harm here!”’ He hissed as quietly as he could, but Mistinguett laughed again.

“Ah, so I have a musician and a gentleman greeting me today,” Mistinguett said between her laughs. Her admirers always seemed to find new ways to surprise her, but still the idea of this new music interested her, even if it turned out to be nothing. “What of you, dear gentleman, do you intend to write me a song also?”

Arthur smiled politely. “No, dear lady, I am an author and as much as would love to write something about you, I fear I could never write your lovely self perfectly enough!” As Mistinguett’s smile softened a little (although Arthur was sure she heard such lines many times), he couldn’t help glancing over to Alfred and smirking a little.

Definitely yours? I think not.

"Stop being a slime ball, Artie. You ain't gonna get anything doing nothing but honeytalking people. However, I'm trying to create a masterpiece for her! Sneaky courting is yesterday, the modern woman wants to be openly desired and men are supposed to show their desire." Alfred winked at the actress suggestively.

It wasn't like he was experienced at dealing with the opposite sex but critical moments like these call for desperate measures.

Mistinguett was frowning, wondering how to deal with this situation. "Well, it is rare to see someone so passionate and open." Now, this was really problematic as she didn't really want to see the two men being so hostile towards each other.

"Why not finish that song and present it to me? I'll gladly wait for it," she said sweetly.

And Alfred was in heaven.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

Post by Preffy~ Tue Nov 22, 2011 11:39 am

The brief exchange between Mistinguett and Alfred drifted to the back of his mind. Arthur’s face was turning bright red with anger. “How dare you!” He fumed, “I’m a slime ball? Just because I made a simple compliment! At least I’m not shouting my mouth off about some great masterpiece!”

From then on an argument seemed to erupt, causing Mistinguett‘s frown to deepen. Alfred retorting that ‘he at least something to offer, besides pretty words’, which only proved to infuriate Arthur more and so the snappy comments between the two continued as both tried to gain Mistinguett’s attentions. She had learnt that both were incredibly dedicated to their professions; the musician, Alfred, promising her a grand masterpiece, which of course she said she would listen as it greatly interested her. The other, Arthur, an author, spoke wondrously of his stories that she wished for more detail of them.

“--And for another thing, I may not be able to make an offer of some grand masterpiece, but the greatest compliment an author can make is telling someone what an inspiration they are!” Arthur said, frowning at Alfred again. They were both very different people, but he had hoped Alfred would at least understand that.

It was at that point that Mistinguett held up one dainty hand, to silence them both.

“As much as you both have flattered me this evening, I am afraid I have another show to prepare for. But I greatly await your musical masterpiece, Alfred, and more details of your stories, Arthur. But for now, I must bid you a goodnight!”

Arthur knew not to protest as she could get them kicked out and then chose to completely ignore his rival, in favour of bidding Mistinguett a goodnight. With the wish of seeing her again soon, he gently kissed her palm and left the room, glancing at Alfred as he did. He wouldn’t admit to him that he too was interested in that so-called masterpiece. What kind of music was it?

With that last thought, and everything that happened that evening and still being flustered at Mistinguett’s request to learn more of his stories, Arthur decided that another drink was in order.

Post by King of Spades Wed Nov 23, 2011 11:49 am

Alfred blushed at the sight of Arthur kissing Mistinguett's hand and he thought that it was extremely gentlemanly. Like something he used to see in storybooks of princes and princesses. He - he wanted to do that as well!

But the next thing he knew he was dragged by Arthur to leave the room. All he could do but protest and shoot one final grin at Mistinguett as a farewell.

Once outside he realised how hard his heart was beating. He could almost hear it among the music. "I- I met her...in person!"

He was going to harrass Arthur with more annoying banter but the Englishman was gone. Now, that was plain rude! But he didn't have to look for too long (why did he look for Arthur in the first place?) as he quickly found him sitting by the bar, sipping on a bourbon.

Episode 1 - Mistinguett Empty Re: Episode 1 - Mistinguett

What an interesting night this had turned out to be.

Arthur sat at the bar, about to order another bourbon, thinking about the days events. He had actually met Mistinguett, spoke to her and even got to kiss her hand. Added to the promise by the lady herself that they would meet again, he would have to thank his new rival for the extra push.

But unfortunately, that was where the good thoughts of Alfred ended. The man was loud, arrogant and Mistinguett noticed him straight away. Arthur wasn’t totally loud, more thoughtful (Unless he was drunk. He had heard stories of how bad he was, personally he didn’t believe it) and yes, he could be quite arrogant at times… just not as loud about it as he was. Finally, Mistinguett seemed more humoured by him than anything else.

Oh, this just made him feel worse. Time for more Alcohol.

Sometime later, he had lost count and what it was he had actually been drinking, his head was spinning and nothing really seemed to make sense. Arthur briefly remembered arguing with someone with a familiar loud laugh, and someone else (Maybe the bartender?) saying that maybe he had enough for one night.

The next blurry memory was of someone attempting to drag him out of the Moulin Rouge, asking him where the hell he was staying because “dude, this totally isn‘t funny anymore”. He remembered wailing back, “I know is not bloody funny, I missed her finale!” Or something like that anyway.

He must have told whoever it was, where it was he was staying (something he would regret later), because he remembered the sign to his hotel.

That was the final thing he remembered that night.
